What I've done with what I've learned so far

I have started a wiki and a blog for the Caroline County Bird Club. The members I've shared them with are really exited about how we can post a variety of information and share

Thing 23 - the end!

23 Things is a great program. This is the first time I've done anything like it. I liked it, but feel like I just skimmed the surface of so many new technologies (for me that is). I'm afraid I won't retain it all. It was a challenge to fit it in to my schedule. I have to say, I did at least four of the weeks on my own time at home. That was my choice, in order to not feel pressured to get it done at work along with my other duties.
My blog has been lots of fun and will help me go back to some of the things to spend more time learning and getting comfortable with some of the things we looked at.
My favorites - in addition to blogging - the avatar, of course.
Also, I'm very excited about doing more with wikis both at work and for my bird club.
YouTube is great fun to explore and I see possibilities for library programming to expand some of our offerings virtually to make it more accessible to more people. I definitely see this as something we may want to do for Teen programming with teens.
Maybe I'll start using Netlibrary, Recorded Books videos and Overdrive (got to get a mp3 player though) myself. That would help me help customers more.
I need to remember to visit Merlin on a regular basis - it's a wonderful resource.
Finally, I need to take all my post-it notes of new membership logins and passwords and create a list I won't lose.:)
Thanks for the opportunity, Nini and thanks to Jennifer Ranck for all your support. Also, thanks to Jessica, Michelle, Jeri, Ann and others who helped the rest of us do our 23 Things!

Thing 22

NetLibrary and Overdrive - we subscribe to both and just started to also subscribe to Recorded books videos as well.
I listened to and watched the instructions for Netlibrary and then set up an account for myself through our page. I would have downloaded a book, but it was VERY slow and I am running out of time. So, I will go back and download a book later and also will set up an Overdrive account for myself.
Project Gutenberg - I know it's been linked on Sailor for a long time, but I infrequently think to access it for customers. I'll have to remember to check there when looking for a classic for someone who needs to read it by the next day....
It's time to purchase a MP3 player!!!

Thing 21

Ok Podcasting. I read through some instructions on how to create one after watching the Ask A Ninja and visited Merlin site on what they had listed on what some other libraries are podcasting. I listened to part of Francis the Scaredy Cat from the Denver Pub Library's podcast list. I think we might have some use for podcasts at work and am glad to know where to go back to really learn and try out creating a podcast. But, I'm thinking videos might be more useful, especially for web page listings - storytimes, booktalks, video some of our adult programs and offer them virtually.

Week 8 - Thing 19

I checked out the web 2.0 awards short list, which seemed long. I saw many of the sites 23 Things had us explore.
I really like YouTube.
I noticed Yahoo!Answers is #1 under Questions and Advice
I noticed under Wikis PBWiki is rated number 2.
Google maps is cool - I looked at the satelite map of my property.

Week 8 - Thing 18

I am trying out Zoho writer. It looks much like Word. Don't think I saw the smiley face option in Word though. There are some other options right on the toolbar that are interesting. I might use this to share a document, instead of using say, a Wiki, but right now, I'm not sure.

It was very easy to export the document as an HTML file and paste it in my blog. My smiley faces didn't copy over though. I'll have to play with it some more later.

Here's the url for later -- https://accounts.zoho.com/jsp/iamlogin.jsp?logout=true

Week 7 Wikis - Things 16 & 17

I really enjoyed this Week. Wikis are just cool!
I got all sorts of ideas for our library to explore - blogs and e-newsletters for library customers and online book club blog or wiki, for a few. Webjunction's Using wikis to create online communities was packed full of great information.

Maybe we should do a Wiki for our local history vertical file.... I definitely think we should re-do our staff intranet as a Wiki. It would give other staff permission to post helpful information and spread the responsibility over all of us.

I registered with Merlin and Maryland libraries sandbox. I entered my blog in the sandbox and added a comment to the list of comments from other knitting librarians (and learned about a knitting blog).

My bird club doesn't have a web site - time and expertise not being available. I see a bird club wiki coming down the pike!

Now that I'm done with Week 6 - Time for some comic relief

Thing #15 - Perspectives on Web 2.0

I watched YouTube video "The Machine is Us/ing Us". Technology is not just for computer geeks anymore - it's for all of us. It's getting easier in one sense, but it's growing and expanding so quickly, it's a challenge to keep up and figure out what we need to know and use here at the library.
I read "Into a New World of Librarianship". One statement really stood out for me - we need to pay attention to our users - "This librarian understands that the future of libraries will be guided by how users access, consume and create content."
"Away from the Icebergs" - really meaningful --
--it no longer makes sense to collect information products as if they were hard to get. They aren’t. In fact, it may no longer make sense to “collect” in the traditional sense at all.
--Libraries are poorly equipped and insufficiently staffed for teaching...if our services can’t be used without training, then it’s the services that need to be fixed—not our patrons.
--We have to be a bit more humble in the current environment, and find new ways to bring our services to patrons rather than insisting that they come to us—whether physically or virtually. At a minimum, this means placing library services and content in the user’s preferred environment (i.e., the Web); even better, it means integrating our services into their daily patterns of work, study and play.

Thing #14 Technorati

Interesting. I don't want to claim my blog though, since it's really for me as a learning tool. I added the most favorite blogs to my del.icio.us site though.

one more thing for thing 13

http://del.icio.us/ to go to this site to login.

Week 6 Thing 13

I watched Liz Davis' tutorial on utube - very helpful. I like del.icio.us. Great way to take my bookmarks with me and benefit by seeing others on similar subjects.

Thing 12 - Rollyo

I listened to the podcast and read about Rollyo. I couldn't get to the website this morning. Will try later. Looks interesting.....

Thing # 11 - LibraryThing

Very neat. I can see why Jane likes it so much. Here's the link to my library: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/dabennett1996

I want to go back and explore this some more.

Checked out meez.com as part of Thing 10

More Week 4

Created my blogline and downloaded the link to my Mozilla.
Read about subscribing to Podcasts, looked at feedster.com, how to subscribe to others photos on Flickr...... really interesting ways to track stuff.

Week 3 - Flickr Fun - Things 5-7

So, tecnical comments -- what I learned in Week 3:

Patience, patience and be sure to tell my husband I'm talking to the computer, not him!:)

As I write this, I notice I can not use the apostrophe key or the backspace key. Will have to figure that out. I did change the font though.

I created my Flickr account and added one photo from my email and one from google images, giving them titles, tags and captions and saved it.
I could not successfully put them in to my blog from Flickr, so cheated and copied them to my desktop and then loaded them into my blog. I learned how to move things around in my template and can now edit pretty well.
I'll ask someone to show me how to successfully copy from Flickr to my blog back at work.

Another technical goal - learn how to use a digital camera and take and upload photos. I'd like my next cell phone to allow me to take photos as well. It would help me at work and I could also share more with family and friends.

I know that some of my co-workers have struggled with some of this 23 Things, but they are all hanging in there. And thanks to all those who are making time to help those of us who need some assistance and cheering folks on - you rock!

This is better than weeding the garden.....

My first Post - Things 1-4

So far, so good. I hope everyone else is having fun creating their blogs.

I really liked the 7 1/2 habits for lifelong learning and have written a contract with myself for one of my goals - to improve my Spanish speaking and comprehension. Technology will help me learn, but it will be a blended learning program - traditional classes, books, interactive cds and Rosetta Stone. And then, practice!

Bueno suerte ya'all!
